Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a common technique used for measuring the body composition and for example determine the proportion of body fat. It does so by measuring to what extent the body is a good conductor of electricity, or in other words, to what extent the body creates a resistance to electricity. Fat has a high resistance, blood a low resistance. A weak electric current is lead through the body and the voltage is measured in order to calculate the resistance (impedance) of the body.
At CTC, we have performed bioimpedance assays in several clinical trials. This technique can especially be used in studies on obesity, diabetes and pre-diabetes.
